Accutane
Accutane is a very powerful prescription acne treatment known for is positive results in fighting sacne. Used primarily for extreme cases where other treatments have failed, accutane is highly effective and typically yields results in four to five months. Accutane often has lasting effects with significant reduction in acne for up to a year or more after treatment has ended.
Accutane decreases the size and output of the sebaceous glands reducing the 'stickiness' of these glands and causing a reduction of the ability to produce and form black and whiteheads. The bacteria on the skins surface and within the sebaceous glands is also greatly reduced.
It is common to start off with a relatively low dose and slowly increase over several weeks based on the impact on ones acne. The treatment period tends to vary but typically lasts for 16 to 20 weeks. Many acne sufferers find that their acne actually worsens prior the positive impacts being shown. Existing lesions also can become redder and more painful, but tend to decrease in numbers. This side effect is normal and should not be cause for alarm or to stop treatment.
One key benefit to Accutane is after treatment has been completed the skin will often respond to more conventional means of acne therapy including over the counter and natural acne solutions.
Accutane may sound like the miracle drug, and for those who have seen great success by using it, it just may be, but it is important to note that it is not without some very serious side effects.

Accutane can cause severe birth defects including mental retardation and physical deformities. Women who are pregnant, or are thinking of becoming pregnant should not uses Accutane. If you accidentally become pregnant while on accutane it is important to consult your doctor immediately.
