Causes of Acne
The exact cause of acne is still unknow, however, there are
many factors that can contribute to outbreaks
Hormones
Hormones can contribute to acne. Premenstrual acne is directly
related to an increase of progesterone after ovulation. Teen
acne can be closely tied to raging hormones in young adults
during puberty. During puberty the body starts to produce
hormones called androgens. These androgens cause an increase
and overstimulation of the sebaceous glands which can result
in acne. The extra oil that is produced in the sebaceous glands
mixes with dead skin cells and bacteria on the skins surface
resulting in blocked pores, and ultimately acne.
Stress
Stress
is tied directly with hormones. An increase in stress can
also cause the production of the hormone cortisol (among others)
which can cause acne flare-ups.
Diet
Wheather or not diet contributes to acne is highly debated
among professionals, however, many believe oily and fried
foods, and nuts can cause breakouts of acne. Smoking can also
cause acne as it can contribute to clogging pores.
Other Causes
- Genetics
- Medications and Steroids
- Heavy or oily make up. This includes oily or greasy skin
care products
